Best Styles for Round Faces?

Kirsten DunstI have a really round face, which is a blessing in some ways, and a curse in others! On one hand, my full cheeks help give me a “youthful” appearance - even though I’m well past the age of 21, I always get carded when I go out, and my girlfriends are always super jealous! On the other hand, I have a round face…and that can be challenging when it comes to picking hairstyles. Choose the wrong style and your face can look, well…fat. No one wants fat face! That’s why my hair style icon is Kirsten Dunst. She has a round face, but she always manages to choose styles that look amazing and sophisticated on her, rather than childlike or weird. I’m loving her take on the elongated bob; longer than chin-length, but not quite shoulder-length, this can be tricky to pull off if you have naturally wavy (read: frizzy) hair like I do, but if you have access to the best flat irons, it’s a snap! And you don’t have to have Kirsten’s Hollywood clout (or bank account) to get the best, either. All you have to do is be willing to make an investment in your hair. I think the best flat irons are those with ceramic plates; they heat up fast, get the job done quickly, and seal in moisture instead of sapping it out of your locks. The result is ultra-soft, elegant hair just like Kirsten’s. You’ll never curse your babyface again!

Going Curly and Straight with a Flat Iron

Gwyneth: Pretty curly or straight!

I think the best flat irons are the kind that have a slight curve in the barrel so that you use it as a straightener or as a curling iron.  Obviously, creating spiral curls isn’t really possible with a flat iron but creating loose, pretty waves that look natural is best done with a flat iron.  When Gwyneth Paltrow’s hair was long, she had a perfect balance of those two looks.  Seriously, how flawless does her hair look??  I have this picture printed out and taped to my bathroom mirror so that I can imitate her style everyday.  And whether I go curly or straight just depends on my mood!  I have been able to create so many fun hairstyles with my flat iron and my hair looks healthier than ever before.  I make sure to use a protectant on my hair before I style it and my locks look glossy and shiny like Gwyneth’s.

Straight Hair is the Best!

flat-ironMy hair has always been frizzy and unmanageable, so of course I’ve always coveted stick straight hair. There’s just so much more you can do with straight hair - it can look pretty, sexy or elegant. Frizzy, poufy hair only has one look: Crazy! That’s why I was so excited when I finally got my flat iron. I’d been thinking about buying one for a while, and I’m so pleased with the results. There are lots of different makes and models of flat irons out there, but I think the best flat irons are the ones that are well-made and have temperature control so you don’t accidentally fry your hair. Choosing one with ceramic plates (rather than metal) is important too, because metal can literally cook your hair! That means you probably shouldn’t just buy the cheapest flat iron you can find; it’s more important to evaluate your options and make a selection that will give you the most value for your investment. And if you end up using your flat iron as much as I do, it will basically end up paying for itself! I love my new straight hair, and I don’t know how I could do it without my trusty straightener.

Using a Flat Iron? Don't Dwell on One Spot!

One of the worst things you can do when you’re using a flat iron to straighten your hair is to go over the same spot with the iron more than 3 or 4 times. This will inevitably dry out your hair and lead to damage, and it’s just a bad habit to get into. Even the best flat irons will damage your hair if you use this misguided “technique.” If your flat iron is just not getting your hair straight enough for your tastes, maybe you need a better iron! There are some great thermal styling tools on the market that will get your hair super straight and luxurious without making you stand in your bathroom for hours at a time, ironing the same piece of hair over and over again! In fact, the very best flat irons will be able to get the job done in just one  or two passes. This will save your hair and save you time.

Taking a Break from My Flat Iron

It’s really hard to do, since I love how I look with smooth, straight hair, but every once in a while I like to give my poor hair a break and refrain from using my flat iron. Even though I use a high quality ceramic iron that’s relatively gentle on my hair and leaves it silky and shiny, I know that even the best flat irons are still heat styling tools, which means that they’ll take their toll on your hair over time. Considering frizz is my number one enemy, I definitely don’t want to dry out my locks and end up with ultra-frizzy hair! I think the best time to take a break is over a long weekend. That way, I can just chill at home and not have to worry about looking my best, and then my hair gets a nice little break from the heat! The best flat irons will keep your hair healthy, but you still need to keep it natural every now and then. Give it a try!

I need the best flat iron I can afford

I have heard that the best flat irons are the ones that stylists use in the salon.  Having a CHI sounds like a great thing but I’m not sure I could afford one.  That is the kind my stylist uses, at least, and I thought they cost over a hundred dollars.  Does anyone know if there is a comparable flat iron that is less expensive?  I am not sure there is because my hair always looks amazing when I leave the salon and I can never seem to achieve the same look at home.  I think it has to do with my tools.  With my problem hair, I think it’s time I invest in the best flat iron on the market.

Michelle Obama's Hair Secrets

michelle-oMichelle Obama has definitely brought a little glamour to the White House, with her fashion-forward wardrobe, toned physique and her beautiful, silky hair. But it may surprise you to learn that Michelle Obama does not chemically straighten her hair - it’s entirely natural! So how does she achieve her straight, swingy styles? With a flat iron! According to Mrs. O’s hair stylist, Johnny Wright, the best flat irons for African American hair are ceramic, because they can reach the high temperatures necessary for straightening thick, curly hair without damaging the delicate shaft. According to Wright, Mrs. O relies on her flat iron for a variety of looks:  “Sometimes I flat-iron her hair under, or I use a ceramic curling iron to flip it out at the ends a little bit. With a flat iron she’s going to be able to lock the moisture in the hair. Because she has to get her hair done so often, the flat iron is probably the best tool for her.” So there you have it! The best flat irons for Michelle-worthy hair are ceramic irons that lock in the moisture.

How Hot Should Your Flat Iron Be?

Here’s a question that’s been on my mind lately: Exactly how hot should my flat iron be when I use it on my hair? I have hair that’s naturally extremely curly and unruly, and it can be quite a chore to get it to calm down when I’m straightening it. I’ve found that I can get straighter faster if I turn the heat way up. However, I’ve heard that this is bad for your hair, as it can be really damaging to the hair shaft and leave your hair dull and - even worse - frizzy! I guess the best flat irons for really curly hair are those that are specifically made for the hair type. Some flat irons are designed to detangle while they straighten and use a more gentle form of high heat in order to prevent damage. If these are the best flat irons for my hair type, then sign me up! I definitely don’t want to leave my hair looking worse than it does already!

Joe Jonas Hair

To achieve true Joe Jonas hair, you should begin by having your hair cut into layers, preferably with a razor. A razor cut will give your hair softness and movement. Next, thoroughly blow-dry your hair; this will make it easier for you to straighten with your flat iron. Before blowdrying, you may want to apply a thermal setting product, which will protect your hair from the heat and make it easier to straighten. Finally, you’re ready for your flat iron! Choosing the right flat iron is a crucial step in this process. You’ll need a flat iron that is smaller than 1” in order to give you the right degree of control, and you should always make sure to choose a ceramic flat iron over one with metal plates to avoid damaging your hair. A CHI 1/2” ceramic flat iron is the perfect choice. CHI is extremely well-regarded by pros and consumers alike, and their ceramic flat iron is one of the top flat irons on the market. The ceramic plates work to maintain temperature, which makes for a gentle, even straightening process. A CHI ceramic flat iron will also make your hair shiny and extremely soft, which girls will love! Take your flat iron and straighten your hair in sections. It may help to use a picture of Joe wearing the style you hope to achieve as your guide! If your hair is particularly unruly, try working in a little styling paste for control. Joe prefers Aveda Control Paste, for a natural textured look that doesn’t scream “product!”

Finally, lock the finished style into place with a little hairspray or spray wax. This will give your hair hold and prevent frizz. Congratulations! Your Jonas Brothers hair look is now complete. This trendy look can work on men of all ages, and proves that styling tools like flat irons are just as important for men as they are for women when it comes to creating great hairstyles. Take the time to master your flat iron and you’ll find that a whole world of styling possibilities will open up to you. Aiming for a specific hairdo, like Joe Jonas hair, is a great way to start. In time, you may find that you have your own styling ideas – you may even create a signature hairstyle of your own. Invest in a quality flat iron today and get started.

Choosing a Flat Iron: What To Consider

If you choose wisely, your flat iron is sure to become an indispensable part of your daily beauty routine. When it comes to creating smooth, straight, beautiful hair, there is simply no better tool than a great flat iron. But how can you find the best flat irons for your needs? Here are a few things to consider when choosing a new straightening iron:

  • The best flat irons feature ceramic (not metal) plates. While metal plates can singe or “cook” your hair, ceramic ones will seal the follicle and condition your hair with negative ions, leaving the shaft smoother and shinier than before. Always look for plates with ceramic layers baked on rather than a thin layer of ceramic over metal.
  • In general, a smaller flat iron (those with plates that are an inch to an inch and a half wide) will work well for most hair types; if your hair is very long or thick, however, you may want to consider an iron with a wider plate - but keep in mind that wider plates are harder to control.
  • Look for plates with beveled or rounded edges to prevent unintentional crimps and dents. You can also use these versatile irons to create flips and waves in addition to straightening.

With these guidelines, finding the best flat irons on the market should be a snap.

Which Is The Best Flat Iron?

jada-pinkett-smithSince straight hair has replaced curly or wavy hair as the height of fashion, thanks to the sleek locks of stars like Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston, flat irons have become increasingly popular among women seeking to create that smooth, healthy look at home. In fact, there are now so many different kinds of flat irons on the market that it can be difficult to decide which one will work best for you. However, choosing the best flat iron doesn’t have to be a chore. With the following simple tips in mind, finding the best flat iron for your needs should be a snap.

To begin, consider the natural length and texture of your hair. If your hair is on the shorter side or if it’s very fine, you’ll need a flat iron with smaller plates – around 1 to 1 1/2” wide. These smaller flat irons will be easier to maneuver and won’t overwhelm your hair. For longer hair, you may want to try a flat iron with plates that are 2” or wider. This will make the straightening process go faster, although it may be more difficult to use than a smaller model. If your hair is extremely thick, coarse or curly, you may also want to try a flat iron with wider plates. In addition to size, pay attention to the shape of the plates on the flat iron. Plates with rounded edges will allow you to create curls and flips in addition to basic straightening tasks, and they won’t leave dents or creases in your hair.

best-flat-ironsNext, you should pay attention to the plate material used on your flat iron. Flat irons that have metal plates can literally burn or “cook” your hair, which is extremely damaging in the long run, and may even make it impossible to achieve the straight, shiny, healthy look you desire in the short run! Instead, look for a flat iron with ceramic plates. Ceramic flat irons use negative ion technology to gently style your hair and seal the cuticle, leaving it smooth and hydrated. Ceramic plates are also ideal for anyone with color-treated hair, as the negative ions and gentle heat will help preserve color as well as shine. Tourmaline and titanium flat irons further enhance the benefits offered by the ceramic flat iron, but be aware that they may be more expensive than regular ceramic flat irons. In addition, always make sure that any flat iron you’re considering has layers of ceramic on the plates, rather than a thin layer on top that will eventually flake or scrape off. Higher quality flat irons will produce better results, and ultimately give you more value for your money.

There are a number of different flat iron manufacturers; choosing among them may require a careful consideration of your budget, as flat irons can cost anywhere from $20 to $200, in addition to the above criteria and even user reviews. You may want to ask your friends or even your hair stylist to recommend a great flat iron; the Internet can also be an excellent resource for comparing consumer reviews and ratings. In general, however, higher-profile brands like CHI, FHI and Corioliss have that time-tested, name-brand cache that ensures that you’ll be getting a great product. If you don’t plan to use your flat iron on a regular basis, however, you may want to look at more affordable alternatives instead of making a pricier investment. Revlon and Conair both offer lower-priced options without sacrificing reliability. Ultimately, finding the best flat iron for you depends on what you need from your flat iron!
